Stater Bros. Charities proudly announced that the 17th Annual Stater Bros. Charities Jack H. Brown Heroes Challenge presented by PepsiCo raised a record $1.2 MILLION for charities on Sunday and Monday at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa in Indian Wells, CA.
The event hosted 380 sponsors and special guests, including five Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, 10 professional golfers, and honorary tournament host Dave Stockton. On Sunday night at the Heroes Challenge Awards Banquet, Stater Bros. Charities awarded $320,000 to local non-profit organizations that are making a positive impact through their communities in Southern California. These organizations included the Congressional Medal of Honor Society ($50,000), California Lions Friends in Sight ($50,000), Inland Empire Lighthouse for the Blind ($50,000), Friends of Leaps and Bounds ($50,000), Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County ($50,000), Volunteer for Veterans Foundation ($50,000), Hunter Lopez Memorial Foundation ($10,000) and Riverside County Sheriffs Explorer Program Post 507 ($10,000). "It's because of our generous sponsors and the time given by our Medal of Honor recipients and professional golfers that Stater Bros. Charities can invest in the important work of nonprofits providing hands-on support throughout Southern California," said Stater Bros. Charities Chairman and President Nancy Negrette. "While our participants get an opportunity to come together to enjoy a single day of golf and each other's company, their generosity enables us to help thousands of people in our local communities." The events culminated on Monday with the Heroes Challenge Golf Tournament, played at the 36-hole Indian Wells Golf Resort. The fun day of golf allowed Stater Bros. teammates and the event's generous corporate sponsors to rub elbows with professional golfers while doing good for communities. Named after Stater Bros.' late Executive Chairman, the Jack H. Brown Heroes Challenge Golf Tournament celebrates Brown’s legacy of honoring those who served and continue to serve our country, in addition to his generous support of the communities served by Stater Bros. Markets. The event hosted five Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force, which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. The recipients in attendance were Harvey C. “Barney” Barnum, Patrick H. Brady, Robert M. Patterson, Jay R. Vargas, and Salvatore A. Giunta. In addition to the Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, 10 professional golfers attended to support the Stater Bros. Charities Jack H. Brown Heroes Challenge. The professionals included former U.S. Ryder Cup Captain and host Dave Stockton, World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Donna Caponi-Byrnes, Gary McCord, Brittany Lang, Don Pooley, Dave Stockton Jr., Ron Stockton, Jin Park, Dan Boever, and Palm Desert native Charlie Reiter.
